Report 1 st Iams Animal Care Advisory Board Meeting

Animal care experts from around the world traveled to Ohio recently to convene the first gathering of the Iams International Animal Care Advisory Board. The group conducted its first on-site review of The Iams Company facilities and practices and released this statement following the visit:

Iams Animal Care Advisory Board Meeting Outcome: Working Together for Animal Well-Being

The Iams International Animal Care Advisory Board met in September 2003 for the first time. We reviewed the Iams Research Policy on the care of cats and dogs in nutritional research, toured the Iams Animal Care Center and studied the Iams Animal Care Program. The Board had many questions for Iams regarding the rationale of their Policy and its implementation across its research sites; we were satisfied with all the answers given. We feel that the current Policy is an excellent first step and we have offered specific recommendations that would further strengthen and enhance the Policy such that the document could be used to determine compliance during future unannounced visits to research sites. We desire to work with Iams to help develop an exceptionally strong Policy and ultimately encourage others to achieve similar high standards.

We will advise Iams on future communications regarding the Iams Policy, will help to develop state-of-the-art advances in animal care and will work together with the Iams staff towards the full implementation of the Policy. We are looking forward to another meeting in the first quarter of 2004 with conference call meetings until then. On behalf of the Board, we feel that this open review and cooperation will help to ensure that The Iams Company develops and maintains high levels of animal welfare in its work, with the aim of promoting high standards of animal care throughout the industry.
